Coca-Cola Still Number One free essay sample
Coca-Cola has for quite some time been a world chief in cola items, with Pepsi being the main rival verging on expelling them from their main spot. In any case, with expanding globalization comes expanding dread that the achievement of residential items may waver. Thus, this outcomes in an expansion in household makers of comparative items with an end goal to build residential achievement and cutoff control of outside makers. Despite these resulting developments in local contenders, Coca-Cola may never genuinely be beaten. In the mid 2000ââ¬â¢s, residential contenders started to emerge in Europe and the Middle East in light of Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s control of the cola advertise. Mecca Cola was propelled with an end goal to turn into the new decision of cola for Muslims around the world, just as to give a substitute to the American cola item. This new organization promised to give 20% of its benefits to Muslim and Palestinian foundations, and even supported the harmony walk in London that exhibited against the U. S. contribution in the war against Iraq (Gillespie Hennessy, 2011). During that harmony walk, 36,000 jugs of Mecca Cola were given out alongside 10,000 T-shirts bearing the Mecca Cola logo and hostile to war mottos. They even outfitted a vehicle with a twenty-foot high Mecca Cola can pulling a trailer with a promotion board bearing the trademark ââ¬Å"Human creatures are completely brought into the world free and equalâ⬠¦ and should think before they drinkâ⬠(Britt, 2003). In any case, even with Mecca Colaââ¬â¢s promise to residential causes and its enemy of war battle, it was not sufficiently able to oust Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s hang available. One more European contender was brought into the world with the formation of Qibla Cola, which propelled in Britain in 2002. Like Mecca Cola, Qibla pledged to give a level of its benefits to compassionate endeavors around the world, and was against the U. S. driven war in Iraq. Qibla even ventured to require a blacklist of all American-made items because of the Iraq war. Be that as it may, similar to Mecca Cola, Qibla was not sufficiently able to go up against a world head like Coca-Cola. Indeed, even household makers like Zam cola, Iranââ¬â¢s choice to Coke, couldnââ¬â¢t contend. As Zam extended further into Middle Eastern markets, Coca-Cola started reintegrate itself into Iranââ¬â¢s markets. None of the European or Middle Eastern makers had the stuff to contend with a worldwide pioneer like Coca-Cola (Gillespie Hennessy, 2011). In Latin America, notwithstanding, Coca-Cola confronted an authentic danger in Kola Real, which was created by Peru locals Eduardo and Mirtha Aranos-Jeri, organizers of the Ajegroup. Kola Real was made in light of the dissidents in Latin America routinely seizing Coca-Cola conveyance trucks. Because of these hijackings, the Ajegroup chose to create its own cola item and disseminate it locally. As they didn't have the enormous overhead costs, for example, publicizing, that Coke did, they had the option to sell their cola item at a cost significantly lower than that of Coca-Cola. This lower cost is the thing that helped the Ajegroup to take a significant portion of the Latin American cola advertise out of the hands of American-made Coca-Cola. Kola Real was by a wide margin more serious with Coca-Cola than its European and Middle Eastern partners (Gillespie Hennessy, 2011). There is an explanation that Kola Real was more serious than both Mecca and Qibla Colas. Contrasted with Coca-Cola, Mecca Cola and Qibla Cola had a few qualities, yet had unmistakably more shortcomings. The qualities that these two residential makers contained were just that they were household, they swore to nearby causes with an end goal to upgrade their own networks, and they wouldn't bolster American war endeavors in Iraq. These elements helped these household organizations to have slight achievement in their neighborhood markets. In any case, their absence of value intensity, just as their absence of capital, showcasing plans, and information on worldwide joining methodologies limited them from getting really serious with the worldwide pioneer. In examination, Ajegroup contained a greater amount of the qualities required to contend with a worldwide maker of this size. Being that it was a privately-owned company, they had the option to evade a portion of the expenses brought about by bigger corporate endeavors. For example, they didn't promote, which allowed them to maintain a strategic distance from a significant creation cost. This was a main consideration in their capacity to value their cola item far beneath that of Coca-Cola, which thus permitted them to be serious in the Latin American cola markets. Likewise, Ajegroup disseminated and sold their items in the littler mother and-pop puts away made up the Latin American market. In Mexico alone, these little mother and-pop sort hides away up 75 percent of all cola deals (Gillespie Hennessy, 2011). Ajegroupââ¬â¢s serious valuing and its region have added to its accomplishment in Latin American markets. With its serious edge, I do believe that Ajegroupââ¬â¢s cola item has the potential for progress whenever extended outside of Latin America. I think whenever dispersed in European or Middle Eastern nations, it might get an opportunity at being serious with Coca-Cola in those business sectors in the event that they can keep on staying serious with their costs. I likewise feel that they have a chance to be fruitful in those business sectors as there is no hostility between the zones, while there is ill will between these regions and the U. S. Likewise, Ajegroup can possibly be serious whenever ventured into the U. S. , halfway because of its serious estimating, and somewhat because of the Hispanic populace that would want to purchase items from their nation of origin. For what it's worth, Ajegroup has as of now effectively ventured into sixteen unique nations with its item ââ¬Å"Big Cola,â⬠remembering territories for Central and South America, just as Southeast Asia (Positive Publications, LLC, 2012). Any organization can possibly be serious while growing, and with Ajegroupââ¬â¢s effectively serious edge in the Latin American markets, I accept they just may have the stuff to extend effectively. Given Ajegroupââ¬â¢s achievement in the Latin American markets, and the danger it forced on Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s share, Coke started to fight back. Coca-Cola started to compromise a portion of the littler Latin American stores, expressing that on the off chance that they sold this new cola item, they would haul their own item out of their stores. Coke additionally ââ¬Å"boughtâ⬠its distributersââ¬â¢ reliability by giving things, for example, free coolers to cool their Cokes and life coverage arrangements for the storekeepers. Clearly this is something that Ajegroup was in no situation to do, such huge numbers of stores would not sell their Kola Real item because of the dangers as well as pay-offs from Coca-Cola (Gillespie Hennessy, 2011). Coca-Cola mishandled their market control over wholesalers trying to hold their control over the Latin American cola markets. I think Coca-Cola could have held their control over Latin American markets with a few procedures that didn't include manhandling their control over their merchants. For example, Coca-Cola can mass-showcase, and could have held a neighborhood VIP or competitor to advance their item. They likewise could have patched up their item picture, making their item progressively alluring in that specific market. They additionally could have had a go at examining the chance of cooperating up with Ajegroup, which would enable them to have not one, yet two items ruling the Latin American Markets. Despite the fact that benefiting as much as possible from the force you as of now have is undoubtedly the simpler course, there are in every case progressively moral alternatives. Taking everything into account, albeit local contenders emerge in light of worldwide rivalry, Coca-Cola may never really be beaten. Despite the fact that expanding globalization brings about an expanding apprehension of local disappointment, local makers may never really have the stuff to contend with the worldwide mammoth. Coca-Cola has been, and keeps on being the world chief of cola items in business sectors around the globe. References

The Ultimate Exercises to Improve Posture (Simple and Effective)
The Ultimate Exercises to Improve Posture (Simple and Effective) How many times in your childhood did your mother yell at you to stand upright or stop slouching?Back then, it might have seemed like they were just being nagging, but in reality, our mothers were trying to prevent us from developing the habit of bad posture.Today, a lot of people suffer from problems related to poor posture, and the worst part is that many of them do not even realize that they have poor posture. How many times have you caught yourself slouching or hunching over your computer, looking down at your smartphone, cradling the phone between your head and shoulders, or sliding forward on your office seat? All these are examples of poor posture, yet we engage in many of them without even realizing it.Essentially, poor posture is any position where there is musculoskeletal distortion in the neck and back due to the spine being in unnatural positions for long periods of time.WHY YOU SHOULD STRIVE FOR PROPER POSTUREEven when we know that some of our habits lead to poor posture, m any of us do nothing to correct our posture. This is because we donât know the negative impact of poor posture.Apart from making you look unattractive and self-doubting, poor posture also has several negative effects on your health and wellbeing. These include:Soreness and pain: Poor posture puts your bodyâs support system (your muscles and skeleton) in unnatural positions. This unnatural position causes misalignment of the spine, resulting in pain in the affected areas.Poor posture also misaligns your bodyâs natural weight distribution, which means that some of your muscles and bones have to bear more weight than they are supposed to.They have to work harder to support this extra weight, leading to pain and soreness in these areas. The areas that commonly experience pain and soreness include the lower back, the shoulders, the neck and the wrists. In extreme cases, poor posture can lead to problems such as a herniated disc and text neck.Increased risk of cardiovascular diseases: P oor posture, such as slouching, puts pressure on the ribcage and diaphragm, which can put more pressure on the heart. The misalignment of the spine can also result in constriction of blood vessels, resulting in poor circulation and conditions like deep vein thrombosis. If left untreated, these conditions greatly increase your risk of suffering from cardiovascular diseases.Poor breathing: Apart from putting more pressure on the heart, pressure on the ribcage and diaphragm also prevents your lungs from expanding properly as you breathe in.This in turns prevents your lungs from taking in as much oxygen as they should.Negative mood: You might think that there is no connection between your body posture and your mood, but studies show otherwise.According to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Auckland, poor posture is associated with lower self-esteem, more fear, worse moods and greater use of negative words.Increased stress: Poor posture has also been shown to lead to i ncreased physical and mental stress.Apart from the physical stress resulting from body pain and soreness, poor posture also increases the levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) in your body, leading to increased mental stress.A study by the San Francisco State University asked students to walk down a hallway either in a slouched position or by cross-crawl skipping. The group that walked in a slouched positions experienced decreased energy levels and higher feelings of depression.Carpal tunnel syndrome: The function and sensitivity of your arms, wrists and hands is controlled by the nerves stemming from your upper back and neck.Since poor posture largely affects these areas (the upper back and neck), it can result in pinching of these nerves, leading to carpal tunnel syndrome, which is a condition where someone experiences tightness, pain, tingling or numbness in the muscles throughout the arm.Tension headaches: This is another problem caused by poor posture that is commonly experien ced by office workers.Sitting all day in a poorly set up workstation â" a monitor or desk that is too low or too high, computer accessories that are not ergonomically designed, a chair that does not provide adequate support, and so on â" puts a lot of strain and tension on your neck and shoulders.Eventually, this tension works its way up your head, resulting in tension headaches.Decreased motivation: I mentioned that poor posture often makes you feel less confident in yourself. This in turn causes you to lose motivation in going after your goals and ambitions.Due to the appearance of self-doubt, others will also consider you as shy or timid, which will negatively affect you both in work-related and social situations.Poor digestion: Just like it squeezes up your rib cage and diaphragm, hunching over and slouching also bunches up the organs around your abdomen together. This leads to decreased ability to digest food, causing you to feel constipated. If left unaddressed for a long per iod of time, this can result in life-changing metabolic problems.Fatigue: Poor posture unnaturally shifts your body weight, which means that some of your muscles have to work much harder to keep you upright. This extra work is tiresome and requires more energy, therefore it leaves you feeling fatigued.EXERCISES TO IMPROVE YOUR POSTURETo avoid experiencing any of the negative effects discussed above, you need to actively work on correcting and improving your posture.Good posture ensures that all the bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments within your body are properly aligned in their correct position and that they are working optimally.Good posture also helps your body to develop proper strength, balance and flexibility. There is less strain on your body and you are less likely to experience any of the negative effects discussed above. In this section, we are going to look at some great exercises that can help you improve your posture. Most of these exercises are easy to perform and do n ot need any complicated equipment, which means that you can easily perform them within the privacy of your home and without the need to invest a lot of money in expensive equipment. The PlankA strong core is very important for developing good posture, and this simple exercise is one of the best ways to strengthen your core. The plank strengthens the several abdominal muscles, including the internal and external obliques, the rectus adbominis (the six pack muscles), as well as the erector spinae muscles on your back, the glutes, and the muscles on your shoulders.Below are the steps on how to correctly perform the plank: Start by lying face down on the floor, with your legs and feet together and your palms alongside your shoulders in pushup position.Raise yourself up onto your forearms, such that your elbow and the rest of your forearm is touching the ground. Your forearms should also be parallel to each other.Lift up your lower body and knees such that only your forearms and toes remai n touching the ground.Lock your abdominal and pelvic muscles to ensure that the middle part of your body does not sag. At this point, your legs, your spine, your shoulders, and your neck should be held straight, with your head facing downwards.Hold the position for a while as your breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth. For starters, try to hold the position for about 30 seconds. You can gradually increase the length of time as your core becomes stronger.Back ExtensionsThis exercise helps you develop a strong back, which is also an important element for maintaining proper body posture. This exercise works the erector spinae muscles, the muscles of the lower back as well as the glutes. This exercise also improves the mobility and flexibility of the spine. Below are steps on how to properly perform back extensions. Start by lying face down on the floor, with your legs and feet together and your hands stretched outwards. Your feet should be outstretched, such tha t the tops of your feet are pressed against the floor.Using only your back muscles, slowly lift up your head and chest off the floor as you simultaneously lift up your feet off the floor. Donât push down into your arms to lift up. At this point, only the middle section of your body (your stomach and hip bones) should be in contact with the floor. Hold the position for a few seconds and go back to the starting position.Repeat 10 â" 15 times, increasing the number of reps as your back becomes stronger. If you find it to perform the exercise, start off with an easier variation of the exercise where you lift up your head, chest and arms off the floor while your feet remain in contact with the floor. You can later move on to the advanced variation as your back becomes stronger.Wall AngelsThis is another simple exercise that you can do from anywhere, even inside your office. This exercise is a great way to test your posture as well as to combat against rounded shoulders. The exercise stret ches out your shoulders and chest and helps strengthen a number of back muscles, including the trapezius, the rotator cuffs and the lats. All you need to perform this exercise is a roomy wall space.Follow the steps below to properly perform the wall angels. Start by standing with your back against the wall, with your heels a few inches from the base of the wall and your knees slightly bent.Make sure that your entire upper body â" your head, shoulders and back â" is touching the wall.Raise your arms with your elbows bent such that your lower arms are pointing upwards while your upper arms are parallel to the floor. The whole of your arms should also be leaning against the wall, with the palms facing outwards.Straighten your elbows to raise your arms above your head, such that they form a letter Y, with your head protruding from the center of the letter Y. As you raise your arms, make sure that they remain in contact with the wall.Hold the position for a few seconds and bring your ar ms back to the starting position, once again ensuring that contact with the wall is not lost.Repeat the arm movement 10 â" 15 times.Chin TuckThe chin tuck is a great exercise for keeping your head aligned above the spine and reversing the poor, forward-head posture. It is also one of the best exercises for combating the neck pain that results from poor posture. The chin tuck exercise strengthens the upper thoracic extensor muscles, which are responsible for pulling the head back into alignment over the shoulders. This exercise also stretches the suboccipital and scalene muscles. The chin tuck exercise can be done in seated or standing position.Below are the steps on how to correctly perform the chin tuck exercise. Sit or stand upright with your shoulders rolled back and down. Make sure that your head is looking straight ahead and that your ears are directly above your shoulders.Place one finger on your chin.Without moving your finger, slightly tuck in your chin and pull your head strai ght backwards until you feel a good stretch at the top of your neck and the base of your head. At this point, there should be a gap between your chin and finger. The finger merely acts as reference for the starting point.Hold the position for a few seconds and go back to the starting position.Repeat the movement 10 â" 15 times. You should perform about 5 to 7 sets (15 rep each) of the exercise throughout the course of the day. This not only strengthens your neck muscles, it also helps you create a habit of maintaining good head posture. The best part about this exercise is that it can be done anytime and anywhere â" as you eat breakfast, lunch or supper, on the train, while waiting at a red light, in the office, basically anywhere.Kneeling Hip Flexor StretchThe kneeling hip flexor stretch is a great exercise for loosening the hip flexor muscles. These are a group of five muscles that connect to the pelvis and the femur. These muscles play a huge rule in our standing posture.Since the p elvis is the base of the spine, tight hip flexor muscles can lead to muscular imbalance in the lower back, leading to poor posture and sometimes lower back pain.Your hip flexor muscles usually become short and tight when you spend a lot of time in seated positions.Follow the steps below to correctly perform the kneeling hip flexor stretch. Kneel down with your left knee and stretch out your foot so that the top of your foot is against the floor. Place your right leg in front such that your thigh is parallel to the floor while your lower leg is perpendicular to the floor, with your knee bent at a 90 degree angle.Place your hands on your right knee, while ensuring that your back remains straight upright.Without getting your left knee off the floor, push your hips forward as your squeeze the muscles in your right buttock. Hold this position for about 30 seconds and go back to the starting position.Repeat the movement for about 10 â" 15 times and then switch sides, placing your right k nee down and bringing your left leg up.Once you incorporate this exercise into your daily routine, you will notice that it becomes easier to stand or sit with a straight spine.Childâs PoseThis exercise is actually a resting pose borrowed from yoga. The childâs pose helps release tension in the muscles of your neck and lower back. This position also lengthens your spine and stretches your hamstrings and glutes.Follow the steps below to correctly perform the childâs pose. Start by kneeling down with your knees together and your big toes together. The upper part of your feet should be against the floor, with your heels pointing slightly outwards.Keeping your knees together and maintaining the position of your feet, sit down on your shin bones.Bend your body at your hips so that your face is almost touching the floor.Stretch your arms in front of you or bring them backwards such that your hands are next to your feet.Remain in this position for up to five minutes, while taking deep b reaths that expand your ribcage.Reverse Plank BridgeThis exercise is a variation of the plank, which we came across earlier. The reverse plank bridge is one of the most effective exercises for straightening your lower back and getting rid of rounded shoulders. The reverse plank bridge works on several muscle groups, including your erector spinae, the middle trapezius, the rhomboids, the front deltoids, the hip flexors, hip adductors, hip abductors and the lumbar spine. This exercise also works your neck extensors. All in all, it is one of the best exercises for improving body posture.Below are the steps for correctly performing the reverse plank bridge. Start by sitting down on the floor, with your legs in front of you. Place your hands behind you with your palms on the ground. You can have your fingers pointed backwards or forward.Press your palms and heels on the floor and lift your pelvis off the floor. Ensure that your knees, your pelvis and your shoulders are in line.Pull your sho ulders back such that the shoulder blades come together while pushing your chest up.Hold this position for 30 seconds. As your core and shoulders muscles become stronger, you can gradually increase the time. The Cat-Cow StretchThis is another exercise that is borrowed from yoga. The exercise consists of repeatedly moving the spine from flexion (a rounded position) to extension (an arched position). The cat-cow exercise is great for increasing abdominal strength and spinal flexibility. The movement of extending and flexing the spine also helps increase circulation in the discs of the spine. This exercise is great for preventing and reducing back pain. It is also a great exercise for those who spend a lot of time in sitting positions.Below are the steps on how to correctly perform the cat-cow stretch: Start by going down on your hands and knees. Your wrists, elbows and shoulders should be directly aligned below each other. Similarly, your knees should be directly below your hips. Your feet should be stretched out with the top of your feet against the floor. Spread out your fingers for better stability.Make sure that your spine is straight, with your shoulders and hips at the same level. Your head should be look down towards your fingers, such that your neck is also in line with your hips, spine and shoulders. This is the neutral position of the spine.Breathe in as you tilt your pelvis upwards and backwards such that your tailbone sticks up.Relax the abdominal muscles so that your belly moves towards the floor and at the same time arch your back downwards.Push your shoulders upwards and at the same time lift your head so that you end up gazing at the ceiling. Hold this position for a few seconds.Exhale as you now tilt your pelvis downwards and inwards, tucking in your tailbone.Follow by drawing your navel towards your spine and at the same time round your back upwards.Drop your head downwards as if you are trying to look at your navel. You want to end up with your ear s between your biceps.Hold this position for a few seconds and then go back to step 3 as you inhale.Repeat the cycle as you inhale and exhale about 5 â" 10 times.Once you are done with your last repetition, go back to the neutral spine position and hold it for a few seconds.WRAPPING UPGood posture is very important for your health and wellbeing, and the eight exercises discussed in this article will help you improve your posture and reverse any negative effects you might be experiencing as a result of poor posture.Itâs good to note that for you to achieve results using these exercises, you should make them a part of your routine.Poor posture is brought about by activities that are part of your daily routine, such as sitting all day at work and driving, therefore you should also perform these exercises every day.If you perform them for only a few weeks and stop, you will soon go back to where you started. Finally, I want to urge you to start performing these exercises today. The old er you get, the more pronounced the effects of poor posture become and the harder it is to reverse them, so donât waste any time.Get started right away.

How Is Oppression Defined in Womens History
Oppression is the inequitable use of authority, law, or physical force to prevent others from being free or equal. Oppression is a type of injustice.à The verb oppress can mean to keep someone down in a social sense, such as an authoritarian government might do in an oppressive society. It can also mean to mentally burden someone, such as with the psychological weight of an oppressive idea.à Feminists fight against the oppression of women. Women have been unjustly held back from achieving full equality for much of human history in many societies around the world. Feminist theorists of the 1960s and 1970s looked for new ways to analyze this oppression, often concluding that there were both overt and insidious forces in society that oppressed women. These feminists also drew on the work of earlier authors who had analyzed the oppression of women, including Simone de Beauvoir in The Second Sex and Mary Wollstonecraft in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Many common types of oppression are described as ââ¬Å"ismsâ⬠such as sexism, racism and so on. The opposite of oppression would be liberation (to remove oppression) or equality (absence of oppression). The Ubiquity of Womens Oppression In much of the written literature of the ancient and medieval world, we have evidence of womens oppression by men in European, Middle Eastern, and African cultures. Women did not have the same legal and political rights as men and were under control of fathers and husbands in almost all societies. In some societies in which women had few options for supporting their life if not supported by a husband, there was even a practice of ritual widow suicide or murder. (Asia continued this practice into the 20th century with some cases occurring in the present as well.) In Greece, often held up as a model of democracy, women did not have basic rights, and could own no property nor could they participate directly in the political system. In both Rome and Greece, womens every movement in public was limited.à There are cultures today where women rarely leave their own homes. Sexual Violence Use of force or coercionââ¬âphysical or culturalââ¬âto impose unwanted sexual contact or rape is a physical expression of oppression, both a result of oppression and a means to maintain oppression. Oppression is both a cause and an effect of sexual violence.à Sexual violence and other forms of violence can create psychological trauma, and make it more difficult for the members of the group subjected to the violence to experience autonomy, choice, respect, and safety. Religions and Cultures Many cultures and religions justify the oppression of women by attributing sexual power to them, that men must then rigidly control to maintain their own purity and power. Reproductive functionsââ¬âincluding childbirth and menstruation, sometimes breastfeeding and pregnancyââ¬âare seen as disgusting. Thus, in these cultures, women are often required to cover their bodies and faces to keep men, assumed not to be in control of their own sexual actions, from being overpowered. Women are also treated either like children or like property in many cultures and religions. For example, the punishment for rape in some cultures is that the rapists wife is given over to the rape victims husband or father to rape as he wishes, as revenge. Or a woman who is involved in adultery or other sex acts outside monogamous marriage is punished more severely than the man who is involved, and a womans word about rape is not taken as seriously as a mans word about being robbed would be. Womens status as somehow lesser than men is used to justify mens power over women. Marxist (Engels) View of Womens Oppression In Marxism, womens oppression is a key issue.à Engels called the working woman a slave of a slave, and his analysis, in particular, was that oppression of women rose with the rise of a class society, about 6,000 years ago. Engels discussion of the development of womens oppression is primarily in The Origin of the Family, Private Property, and the State, and drew on anthropologist Lewis Morgan and German writer Bachofen. Engels writes of the world historical defeat of the female sex when Mother-right was overthrown by males to control inheritance of property.à Thus, he argued, it was the concept of property that led to womens oppression. Critics of this analysis point out that while there is much anthropological evidence for matrilineal descent in primal societies, that does not equate to matriarchy or womens equality. In the Marxist view, the oppression of women is a creation of culture. Other Cultural Views Cultural oppression of women can take many forms, including shaming and ridiculing women to reinforce their supposed inferior nature, or physical abuse, as well as the more commonly acknowledged means of oppression including fewer political, social and economic rights. Psychological View In some psychological views, the oppression of women is an outcome of the more aggressive and competitive nature of males due to testosterone levels. Others attribute it to a self-reinforcing cycle where men compete for power and control. Psychological views are used to justify views that women think differently or less well than men, though such studies dont hold up to scrutiny. Intersectionality Other forms of oppression can interact with the oppression of women.à Racism, classism, heterosexism, ableism, ageism, and other social forms of coercion mean that women who are experiencing other forms of oppression may not experience oppression as women in the same way other women with different intersections will experience it.

Cyber Bullying And Its Effects On Children - 1314 Words
Bullying, according to Oxford Dictionary, is the use of ââ¬Å"superior strength or influence to intimidate, typically to force someone to do what one wants.â⬠Growing up, the only bullying that I have witnessed is on the television. The majority of people perceive a bully as a tough boy threatening another for his lunch money, but times have changed in unison with technology evolving. One of the overwhelmingly popular uses of the internet is to contact friends and relatives by posting pictures and sending comments on social media websites. For example, according to Jay Baer, a social media researcher, ââ¬Å"56% of Americans have a profile on a social networking siteâ⬠. The outcomes of these sites when used appropriately are enjoyable, but for children ages ten to eighteen, cyber bullying is a frequent activity through the sites. Social media websites need filters to decrease cyber bullying since young users have no remote understanding of the unsafe environment and of the depth the effects cyber bullying has on their victims, as well as themselves. Social media websites do not provide a safe and friendly environment for all age ranges. Consequently, ââ¬Å"81% of teens use some kind of social mediaâ⬠making it a popular, yet cowardly source for bullying. Since smart phones and computers surround each one of us, teens hide behind them. string(113) " event The National Maritime Museum is also one of the unique venues hold many conferences, events and weddings\." MARKETING TRAVEL AND TOURISM PRODUCTS AND SERVICES I ââ¬â Introduction I have been offered a short period placement in the National Maritime Museum. As part of my team projects in the Marketing Department, I have to produce a brief report to describe the marketing mix of the organisation in order to examine different aspects of marketing. The National Maritime Museum located in the heart of Greenwich where is home to historically buildings and most important national collections. We will write a custom essay sample on Museum Marketing Mix or any similar topic only for you Order Now It is the museum itself and also is a visitor attraction, which is funded by the Government to maintain its World Heritage Site. Each year the museum attracts many visitors from all over the world to come and see a wide range of displays and to have the understanding of the seas, oceans, time and space, planets and the universe and know the importance and their relationship with people. As a tourist attraction, the museum has to produce a marketing plan to meet the needs of the market and the visitors. Marketing mix is an essential part affect customerââ¬â¢s motivation for all organisations in terms of products, price, place and promotion. II ââ¬â Marketing Mix 2. Products Visitors, of course, come to museum to see the arts, galleries, collections, displays and models. In the National Maritime Museum visitors can explore the astronomy and time by seeing how stars and planets are born, the Solar systems, Harrison timekeeper at the galleries. There are over two million collections relating to seafaring, astronomy, time measurement and navigation with over 9000 objects and 12,000 images in the museum. The other reason for visitors to come to the museum is that Greenwich is also a tourist destination itself, well known as a World Heritage Site. Specifically, the museum is made up of three significant sites, which are: the Royal Observatory, famous as the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and the Prime Meridian Line (Longitude 0 degree, the Queenââ¬â¢s House ââ¬â the first building built with the classical style in England and the National Maritime Museum galleries (Maritime galleries). These three main sites can also be separate products. They have Observatory Galleries, Planetarism in the Royal Observatory; rare portrait collections by the most famous painters Van Dyck, Gainsborough, Hogarth and Reynolds in the Queenââ¬â¢s House. The museum does not target any specific type of customers, they do a lot of activities to attract families with children, adults, group visit, school trips and businesses: â⬠¢ Permanent and temporary exhibitions [pic] The museum runs many exhibitions for all people throughout the year. For example, North-West Passage, Astronomy Photographer, Jeremy Millar: Given are three highlighted exhibitions. pic] Besides, tour exhibitions are quite popular and normally full-booked as they complement activities on-site and make a tour through many places in the UK such as Beacon, Glasgow, Hull, Aberdeen, Great Yarmouth, etcâ⬠¦ Some big tour exhibitions are: Beside the Seaside on tour, Turmoil and Tranquillity on tour, Your Ocean on tour and on tour ââ¬â Skin deep: a history of tattooing. [ pic][pic][pic] They also offer exhibition specialise for children called All Hands and the Bridge Interactive Galleries open to families every Tuesdays weekly and uring school holidays. It all designed for children at all ages, they will be able to send a semaphore signal, load a cargo ship and more exciting is firing a cannon. This exhibition is also use for school group as a superb resource. â⬠¢ Special Events The National Maritime Museum produces a variety of events include family events, adult programmes, school programmes, and sign-interpreted events. [pic] A lot of fun activities are offered in family events for all, for under five years old and five years old plus in particular. There are some more special events for summer holidays, half-term holidays, which are Explore Saturdays, Discover Sundays, Family Treasures and Creative Cargo. More over children can also have the opportunity to create and build their own models and stuffs such as Victory boat model, rocket, sea-monster mask and global and quadrant. [pic] Adults programmes are events supposed to help adults to go in deep the concepts and ideas of history, features in terms of the sea, time and stars which are related to the Museumââ¬â¢s collections through courses such as GCSE Astronomy, Introduction to Astronomy or The Solar Systems. The methods of teaching are lectures, study days, film seasons, workshops, panel discussions and tours. Study programmes are not only for adults; there are plenty of courses, study days for students from Primary, GCSE to A-level studies include Science, History, Physics, Citizenship Geography, Business Studies, and Travel and Tourism. Provided by excellent, enthusiastic teachers giving great opportunities for students to experience and enjoy all fun activities. Especially for school visits, they provide education resources in particular subject. [pic] [pic] Students on study day Girls doing school projects in ââ¬Å"Your Oceanâ⬠galleries If you visit any tourist attraction we can easily see the souvenir and gift shops selling toys, books or other products related to that place. Obviously, visitors come to visit the attractions and would like to bring something home to remember that day or just to buy presents for their friends or families. In the National Maritime Museum, there is a wide range of stuffs linked to their collections and to be found by subjects such as Cards, Time and Timepieces, Telescopes Binoculars, Maps, Globes Exploration, Clothing and Personal accessories, Books, Toys, Kidsââ¬â¢ bookshop, Corporate gifts, Teachersââ¬â¢ resources and many other things. Another essential section in the museum is restaurant and cafe area, as all visitors get tired after the whole day exploring the museum, they need to have a rest at the coffee shops and fill in their stomachs in the restaurants. There are two coffee bars in the Museum, The Galley where visitors can have delicious soups, hot food or they can have salads, sandwiches if fancy cold food. And the other is Paul where they can find light snacks and enjoy the seasonable drinks in the Museum. [pic] [pic] Summer drinks at the Museum Volvo corporate event The National Maritime Museum is also one of the unique venues hold many conferences, events and weddings. You read "Museum Marketing Mix" in category "Papers" Businesses hire the venue not only because of the beautiful place, they want to experience the fabulous views across London and glaze the stars by having private telescope after the meetings. The Museum also provides food and drink at the venue, corporate services and photographic services. [pic] [pic] Corporate event on the Upper Deck during Queenââ¬â¢s House southwest parlour set up the evening for a meeting â⬠¢ Product life cycle [pic] As I have illustrated on the graph above, there are 4 main periods of a product life cycle which are Introduction, Growth, Maturity and the last period is either Re-growing or Decline. From my point of view, I think the National Maritime Museum is on the Maturity period as the Museum is an old organisation. Besides, to avoid declining, new events, exhibitions, study programmes are coming every month to attract more potential visitors and more coming back visitors. Moreover, they keep maintaining the attraction by planning conservation and new capital projects. They are working on the major new wing project and will be opened in 2012 in time for the London Olympics in order to grow the volume of visitors both from domestic and international. There are five key features of the new project: ? new entrance from the South new spaces for special exhibitions ? an open archive research centre ? a stylish new cafe, brasseries and shop and upgraded visitor facilities ? flexible new learning spaces [pic] The Sammy Ofer Wing Project ââ¬â National Maritime Museum We can say the Museum is stepping to the re-growing period after all. Obviously, their new wing project will bri ng a massive growth of tourists from all over the world. 2. Price â⬠¢ Strategies Entry to the Museum is fee as it belongs to the nation and is funded by the Government to remain the World Heritage Sites. There was a debate ages ago about the admission costs of the Museums. We all know that if the Museums increase their admission fees, they can use that income source to contribute to image-building, marketing purposes in order to reach the specifics markets. However, there were some evidences proved that the number of visitor decreased after the announcement of charging the Museum entrance fee. According to the survey result in 1988, the number of visitors at the National Maritime Museum fell by 37% in the year they imposed charges. â⬠¢ Competitor analysis Almost Museums in the UK are fee of admission such as the National History Museum, Science Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum. Therefore, what they are going to do to gain competitive advantage? The answer is adding value to their products and services. Although people visiting the Museum do not have to pay the admission fee, they still want to see the value of products and services offered at the attraction. The National Maritime Museum sends the message of ââ¬Å"good valueâ⬠to visitors by providing the unique collections, special exhibitions, the upper-class services to ensure that they will have a good experience when visiting the Museum without paying any money. â⬠¢ Discounting Although the Museum is funded by the Government, but it can not cover the staffââ¬â¢s salaries, maintenance costs, new projects and other expenses. Because of that they need to earn from other income sources as I have mentioned in the Products description above. The Museum does discounts for some products such as half-price, bye one get one free at souvenir and gifts shop, discounts for Planetarium Shows, free for children under 3 years old and reduce prices for students (full time), unemployed (ES40 holders), holders of ISE youth cards, disabled visitors and seniors 60+. For disabled visitors, there is no charge if they need a helper. To have more benefits, visitors can apply for the Museum membership receiving: ? 20% percents discount on all food and drink ? Exclusive membership events and private views ? Lively programmes of talks and lectures ? Access to planetarium shows for free ? Free entry to all special exhibitions ? These features make the Museum unique. [pic] â⬠¢ Accessibility Transport to and from the attraction: The Museum situated in Greenwich, where easily accessed by the public transports. There are many ways travelling to the Museum, which are: ;; The nearest Docklands Light Railway station is Cutty Sark. From the station, it only takes approximately six to ten minutesââ¬â¢ walk to the Museum. There are two underground tube stations, which are Greenwich and Maze Hill stations. It takes about 12-15 minutes from Greenwich station and 8 minutes from Maze Hill walk to the National Maritime Museum. [pic] Recommended routes from main London terminals (www. nmm. co. uk) â⬠¢ Buses There are numerous buses service to Greenwich town centre, Greenwich Park and Royal Observatory from many parts of London. Moreover, there are provisions for people with difficulties such as deaf, blind and partially sighted visitors. Those provisions include free large-print touchable guide, audio guides and BSL signed Planetarium monthly shows for deaf visitors. pic] 4. Promotion â⬠¢ Methods Promotion is a very important part and cannot be missed out in the marketing mix, as they need to raise awareness of new products and services or the museumââ¬â¢s developments. The first and most common method is advertising by distributing leaflets, posters, and press releases. The second method is sales promotion by using discounts vouchers for joint promotion. The next method is direct marketing b y sending direct mails in order to encourage people to visit the Museum and event bookings. They also hold exhibitions as trade shows target group organisers and tour operators. In addition, the Museum use different types of media such as national and local newspapers, radio stations, transport sections. â⬠¢ Materials As a public sector organisation, the Museum cannot spend a lot of money on advertising. TV advert is very expensive then it is not necessary, the budget way of advertising is distributing leaflets, posters, and flyers to promote campaigns, special exhibitions, three Museum sites, and activities for all ages: [pic] [pic] Leaflet promoting the ââ¬ËExplore Oceansâ⬠A selection of NMM leaflets [pic] [pic] ââ¬ËInspiring minds for freeââ¬â¢ 2006 poster campaign Joint promotion is the effective way by sharing the costs with other travel and tourism organisations. The Museum connects with those organizations to have a wider range of customers and to add value of money when people buy holidays as packages bring advantages for both sides. Discount vouchers are offered when comprising with other tourist attractions, tour companies, hotel groups and magazine promotions. The National Maritime Museum also has joint promotion with transport sector, which is c2c Train Company with 10% off at the Museumââ¬â¢s shop and a free pot of tea or coffee when spending over ? 4 in the cafe. [pic] c2c joint promotion Press releases are essential in marketing, as all relevant information in the Museum have to be kept up ââ¬â to ââ¬â date. In the museum there is a press office covers all angles from press coverage to media interest. Press officers have to produce press releases to inform the national and international media all developments at the Museum. Furthermore, they will have to work out the unique images and the ideas to use for campaign posters or to be published on newspapers. [pic] An image from the front cover of the Independent on Sunday, 24 March 2002, promoting the ââ¬ËSkin Deepââ¬â¢ exhibition [pic] A 4-sheet poster on London Underground for the ââ¬ËSkin Deepââ¬â¢ exhibition III- Explanation of how the 4Ps work together as a marketing mix in the National Maritime Museum Marketing is sending a message to keep people satisfy. Basically, marketing is all about creating false needs that means they comprise all marketing elements in order to make the wants become needs. Organisations always have to think about what people want in the future and work out what they can do to attract potential customers. Marketing elements cannot go separately, we need to put them in a pot, mix them together and that is the only thing we can alter to end up success or failure of a business. The following graphic shows the relationship between the 4Ps in the National Maritime Museum: In the National Maritime Museum we can see the mixture of products, price, place and promotion. In the marketing mix, products and price are the most important then we use place and promotion to bring the business to the highest point of selling. All three components: Price, Place and Promotion affect the selling of Products and Services. There is no admission fee for Museum entrance, many free events and exhibitions. The word ââ¬Å" FREEâ⬠has a big influence to every single person, therefore, more and more people coming in to see what is provided in the Museum. All planetarium shows charge with a very reasonable price (under ? 10) appeal audiences come to see the shows. In every business, normally, the Price makes a strongest influence to the selling of products and services. New products and services need to be advertised in order to raise public awareness. The Museum use leaflets, posters, flyers to promote their new shows, events and exhibitions; buy a space on the newspaper, an advert on the radio station, places big posters in the on underground station with the same purpose of driving people to their products and services. The Museum spends some money to make some money. Although they choose the budget ways of promoting to avoid not spending a large amount of money but they spend a little to make a lot. Internet booking system is the most convenient way of selling products and services. The National Maritime Museum provides many booking options in order to give the best convenience to customers to buy their products and services. The Museum is unique because of itsââ¬â¢ Heritage Sites, people come to explore the Museum and to see the surroundings attractions. That means the Place also bring customers to the Museum, which we can understand as Products. However, the Price and Promotion are linked together as they use the Price to promote the products and services. The Museum reduces the price to have price promotion such as discount vouchers for joint promotion (10% off on all products at Museumââ¬â¢s shop, free a pot of tea or coffee at cafeââ¬â¢ when spending over 4 pounds). Some exhibitions are free with a purpose of promoting and targeting groups of visitors. Promotion also affects the channel of distribution. One of the promotion methods used by the Museum is direct selling. They open exhibitions, inviting people and sell directly to group organisers, tour operators, and other travel and tourism organisations. Generally, marketing mix plays a very important part of the marketing strategies. In order to reach the market changes and to gain competitive advantage, the National Maritime Museum has to work out more future plans to maintain the ever-growth volume of visitors and to attract both domestic and international visitors. Things Fall Apart Essays (1149 words) - African Writers Series
Things Fall Apart Things Fall Apart Reading Review Title of Work: Things Fall Apart Country/Culture: African Literary Period: Classical Genre: Novel Author: Chinua Achebe Authorial Information: Chinua Achebe was born and grew up in the Ibo village of Ogidi when Nigeria was still a British colony. Although Achebe won a scholarship to study medicine, his love of literature and growing involvement with African nationalism changed his career. The nationalism movement after World War II brought with it a new sense of African self-awareness and confidence, and it occurred to Achebe that he and his fellow Africans might have their own stories to tell. Achebe's insight made him question the colonial-era notion that African culture was inferior to the culture the European colonist had grafted onto Africa, usually be force. As a gesture defining his roots. Achebe dropped his first name, Albert, which his parents had given him in honor of Queen Victoria's husband. In 1958, while working for the Nigerian Broadcasting Company, Achebe published his first novel, Things Fall Apart. The novel tells of and Ibo man whose personal life is ruined as a result of colonial pressures. This was the first of three novels that Achebe wrote to explore the Ibo past and the destructive effects of colonialism on African cultures and on individual Africans. In 1960, the new nation of Nigeria, with over two hundred ethnic groups, was not a unified country. The four largest ethnic groups, the Ibo, Hausa, Fuliani, and Yoruba, were constantly fighting for land and power. Many of the frictions originated in the groups' very different religions, languages, and outlook on life. Eventually, in 1967, things fell apart. Achebe was one of the many Ibo who unsuccessfully tries to secede from Nigeria and establish a new republic called Biafra. In the worst months of the bloody, three-year civil war, about twelve thousand people, mostly children, starved to death each day. Overall, somewhere between one million and two million people died-many of them from disease and hunger. Several stories in Achebe's story collection Girls at War (1973) describe the tragedies and horrors of these years of civil war. Chinua Achebe wrote Things Fall Apart because nobody had written a story like his before. Achebe wrote this book to tell of his side of the story; because he can relate to Okonkwo, the main character, because Achebe was an Ibo group member also. Author's unique style: Achebe uses irony, folklore and customs as his unique styles. Achebe uses irony when Okonkwo says, ?I will sacrifice one of my children to save this village,? then Obieraka says, ? well why don't you sacrifice yourself then.? This is ironic because to save the village, Okonkwo kills on of the messengers and instead of being killed by the District Commissioner, Okonkwo hangs himself. Achebe uses folklore when someone is trying to make a point to someone. This happens when Uchendu tells a story to make Okonkwo not hit his wives. Achebe uses the Ibo tribe's customs as a way to tell the reader of how the tribe lived. This happens when Achebe tells of the spirits who come out to give someone a trial. Setting: The setting is the early 20th century in Nigeria. The social environment is the English colonization in the African tribes. Theme: A theme of Things Fall Apart is, ?In life, time changes everything.? This is true in Things Fall Apart. Okonkwo had a good life until the British came and changed everything about their past ways of life. As time progressed, Okonkwo became madder as each day passed about how the British were treating them. His temper reached it's climax when he killed a messenger of the District Commissioner. Characters: Okonkwo-the main character. Okonkwo's motivation is to keep the British from taking away the Ibo's culture. His outcome is that he kills a messenger and then hangs himself. Unoka-Okonkwo's dad. Unoka's motivation is to just make enough money to keep him and his family alive, and then be lazy for the rest of the time. Unoka's outcome is that he dies, heavily in debt to many people. Nwoye-Okonkwo's first son. Nwoye's motivation is to rebel against Okonkwo because Okonkwo pushes him too hard. Nwoye's outcome is that he becomes a Christian and leaves his family to go to a Christian school. Ezinma-

Victorian societal conventions Essay Example Victorian societal conventions Essay Victorian societal conventions Essay Ironically, these goals are to fit in with the society one more, thus underlining the futility of her quest. Lady Windermere vacillates between adhering to societal conventions and has followed her instincts in her emotions. By the end of the play she is convinced she has made the right decision, ultimately serving to demonstrate how difficult it is for an individual to break away from the expectations of society. These contrasting themes once again aid in the plot; this is because of how the characters all talk about Mrs Erlynne, saying of how she is a scoundrel and to not be trusted. These accusations are soon scattered around and fall into Lady Windermereââ¬â¢s lap, adding to the tragic stance of the piece. Due to the Victorian societal conventions, anyone that is frowned upon is immediately seen as dirt and someone to keep away from. Another thing to keep in mind is that if the play were to have been written in modern day, the consequences of Mrs Erlynneââ¬â¢s actions whilst would still be frowned upon, would not be unheard of. Therefore, her rejection from society would be less likely as society no longer functions in the overall same way that Victorian society did. Finally we have trust and betrayal. Trust is a fairly rare commodity in this play and Wilde seems to suggest that trust is not to be found very easily within Victorian society. Lady Windermere doesnââ¬â¢t trust her husband and is quick to believe that he has betrayed her. In return, she seems only too eager to betray him with Lord Darlington. Lord Windermere is forced to trust Mrs Erlynne in a way as he hopes that her intentions towards her daughter are benign and that she wonââ¬â¢t try to drag all of them into the mire. This trust is then rewarded at the end of the play as Mrs Erlynne leaves with the potential scandal avoided. Wilde could be suggesting that there isnââ¬â¢t enough trust and far too much deception and betrayal, and that in order to get ahead in life one must learn to be brave and trust others a bit more. Trust and betrayal are very important themes in Lady Windermereââ¬â¢s Fan as without them, there wouldnââ¬â¢t be much of a story to tell or at least, a less interesting one. This is because, without the idea of betrayal the level of tragedy would have greatly decreased, in turn possibly causing less intrigue and viewer enjoyment.Wilde has also once again, skilfully and linguistically hidden another truth of the world and how it works. Overall, I believe that all the contrasting themes in Lady Windermereââ¬â¢s Fan play important parts in not only creating an initial idea for the play but also, to continue the play with fluent language that will draw in the viewer and even make them think. Not only do these themes entice the viewer, they create a complex and interesting story line to last years.

Biography of Charles Vane, English Pirate
Biography of Charles Vane, English Pirate Charles Vane (c. 680ââ¬â1721) was an English pirate active during the Golden Age of Piracy, roughly from 1700 to 1725. Vane distinguished himself by his unrepentant attitude toward piracy and his cruelty to those he captured. Although his primary hunting grounds were the Caribbean, he ranged from the Bahamas north along the East Coast of North America as far as New York. He was known as a skilled navigator and combat tactician, but he often alienated his crews. After being abandoned by his last crew, he was arrested, tried, convicted, and hanged in 1721. Start of a Career Very little is known about Vanes early life, including his parents, his birthplace, and any formal education he acquired. He arrived in Port Royal, Jamaica, sometime during the War of Spanish Succession (1701ââ¬â1714), and in 1716 he began serving under the infamous pirate Henry Jennings, based in Nassau, Bahamas. In late July 1715, a Spanish treasure fleet was hit by a hurricane off the coast of Florida, dumping tons of Spanish gold and silver not far from shore. As the surviving Spanish sailors salvaged what they could, pirates made a beeline for the wreck site. Jennings, with Vane on board, was one of the first to reach the site. His buccaneers raided the Spanish camp on shore, making off with some 87,000 British pounds in gold and silver. Rejection of a Pardon In 1718, King George I of England issued a blanket pardon for all pirates who wished to return to an honest life. Many accepted, including Jennings. Vane, however, scoffed at the notion of retirement and soon became the leader of those in Jennings crew who refused the pardon. Vane and several other pirates outfitted a small sloop, the Lark, for service as a pirate vessel. On Feb. 23, 1718, the royal Frigate HMS Phoenix arrived in Nassau, part of an attempt to convince the remaining pirates to surrender. Vane and his men were capturedà but were released as a goodwill gesture. Within a couple weeks, Vane and some of his die-hard companions were ready to resume piracy. Soon he had 40 of Nassaus worst cutthroats, including seasoned buccaneer Edward England and Calico Jack Rackham, who later became a notorious pirate captain. Reign of Terror By April 1718, Vane had a handful of small ships and was ready for action. He captured 12 merchant ships that month. He and his men treated captured sailors and merchants cruelly, whether they surrendered or fought. One sailor was bound hand and foot and tied to the top of the bowsprit; the pirates threatened to shoot him if he didnt reveal where the treasure on board was located. Fear of Vane drove commerce in the area to a halt. His hunting grounds eventually ranged from the Bahamas along the East Coast of North America as far north as New York. Vane knew that Woodes Rogers, the new British governor of the Bahamas, would be arriving soon. Deciding that his position in Nassau was too weak, he set out to capture a larger pirate ship. He soon took a 20-gun French ship and made it his flagship. In June and July of 1718, he seized many more small merchant vessels, more than enough to keep his men happy. He triumphantly re-entered Nassau, essentially taking over the town. Bold Escape On July 24, 1718, as Vane and his men prepared to set off again, a Royal Navy frigate sailed into the harbor with the new governor. Vane controlled the harbor and its small fort, which flew a pirate flag. He welcomed the governor by firing immediately on the Royal Navy fleet and then sending a letter to Rogers demanding that he be allowed to dispose of his plundered goods before accepting the kings pardon. As night fell, Vane knew his situation had deteriorated, so he set fire to his flagship and sent it toward the navy ships, hoping to destroy them in a massive explosion. The British fleet hurriedly cut its anchor lines and got away. Vane and his men escaped. Meeting With Blackbeard Vane continued pirating with some success, but he still dreamed of the days when Nassau was under his control. He headed to North Carolina, where Edward Blackbeard Teach had gone semi-legitimate. The two pirate crews partied for a week in October 1718 on the shores of Ocracoke Island. Vane hoped to convince his old friend to join in an attack on Nassau, but Blackbeard declined, having too much to lose. Deposed by His Crew On Nov. 23, Vane ordered an attack on a frigate that turned out to be a French Navy warship. Outgunned, Vane broke off the fight and fled, though his crew, led by the reckless Calico Jack, wanted to stay and fight to take the French ship. The next day, the crew deposed Vane as captain and elected Calico Jack instead. Vane and 15 others were given a small sloop, and the two pirate crews went their separate ways. Capture Vane and his small band managed to capture a few more ships and by December they had five. They headed for the Bay Islands of Honduras, but a massive hurricane soon scattered their ships. Vanes sloop was destroyed and most of his men drowned; he was left shipwrecked on a small island. After a few miserable months, a British ship arrived. Vane tried to join the crew under a false name, but he was recognized by the captain of the second vessel that met the British ship. Vane was placed in chains and taken to Spanish Town, Jamaica, where he was imprisoned. Death and Legacy Vane was tried for piracy on March 22, 1721. The outcome was in little doubt, as a long line of witnesses testified against him, including many of his victims. He was hanged on March 29, 1721, at Gallows Point in Port Royal. His body was hung from a gibbet near the entrance to the harbor as a warning to other pirates. Vane is remembered today as one of the most unrepentant pirates of all time. His greatest impact may have been his steadfast refusal to accept a pardon, giving other like-minded pirates a leader to rally around. His hanging and the subsequent display of his body may have contributed to the hoped-for effect: The Golden Age of Piracy came to an end not long after his demise. Sources Defoe, Daniel (Capt. Harsh Parenting during Adolescence Research Paper
Harsh Parenting during Adolescence - Research Paper Example More often than not these social constraints are enforced and reinforced by parents. (Choudhury, Blakemore and Charman) A variety of reasons are prescribed for parental control including (but not limited to) the rebellious attitude of teenagers, the parentââ¬â¢s desire to make the individual more conforming to their ideals and ideologies and the need to make the individual more compliant to social norms and values. These objectives are met by parents in a variety of ways. The relationship between teenagers and parents is generally a rocky one. In order to exert their influence, parents may resort to physical and emotional coercion. (Kelley) Such parental behaviour is seen to affect adolescent growth and their adult behaviour negatively. Most adolescents with coercive parents are known to develop aggressive symptoms later in life. This aggression may be emotional or physical and may continue throughout an adultââ¬â¢s life unabated. (Pedersen) Though the effects of parental contr ol on adolescent behaviour are well documented but the immediate outcomes have been historically overlooked. Parents exerting themselves on children encourage the growth of individuals who are seeking chances to overthrow the established regime of parental control. The results are often disastrous such as school shootouts such as the Columbine massacre. Moreover, teenagers may resort to joining gangs or resort to drug use in order to exert their independence. It remains notable here that all forms of parental control result in deviant social behaviour. Therefore it can be hypothesised that excessive parental control during adolescence can lead to an increase in deviant behaviour in society. This text attempts to analyse such a relationship through secondary research. Literature Review Numerous studies have been conducted in order to clarify the connection between parental exertion and resulting adolescent behaviour. Various perspectives and aspects have been covered through these st udies. This text was prepared by reviewing a few instrumental studies and their results which are discussed below. The distinction between physiological control and behavioural control for human beings has long been established firmly. (Baumrind) Baumrindââ¬â¢s study was conducted over a fourteen weeks period where he observed three different groups of children. The behaviour of each group was markedly different. One group was composed of energetic and friendly children while another group was composed of conflicted children who were irritable. The last group was composed of impulsive and aggressive children. The parents of these children were interviewed to discern the distinct patterns of parenting. There is an overwhelming tendency to combine these two aspects of human control and to study their effects together. Such an approach is hardly considered feasible as it tends to coalesce related aspects so that they are not distinctly recognisable anymore. For example the psycholog ical effects of beatings on a child who is being cajoled psychologically as well cannot be distinctly related. The typological approach developed by Baumrind is highly helpful in this regard as it delineates categorical distinctions to psychologically and behaviourally controlling parents. For example, authoritative parents are represented as being warm and accepting. Such parents tend to establish strict behavioural guidelines but promote psychological

Developmental Differences Between Autistic Children And Normal Child De
Autism is an intricate developmental disability that characteristically appears during the first three years of life. The consequence of a neurological disorder that involves the functioning of the brain, autism affects the normal growth of the brain in the region of social interaction and communication skills. Autism literally means living in terms of the self. To an observer, a child in a state of autism appears to be self-centred since he shows little response to the outside world. However, paradoxically, the child in such a state has little awareness of being a 'self'. (Tustin, 1972, p. 1) Children and adults with autism normally have problems in verbal and non-verbal contact, social communications, and leisure or play activities. Autism is one of five disorders coming under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), a category of neurological disorders characterized by "severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development," including social interact ion and communications skills (DMS-IV-TR). The five disorders under PDD are Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD), Rett's Disorder, and PDD-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). Autism is a spectrum disorder. In the normal autism of early infancy there are the components from which this can take place but which are not developed. In 'total' pathological autism there has been such a profound arrest or regression that the building of this inner construct has been impeded or impaired so that the child is completely out of touch with the outside world and with people. Reaction to the outside world and people is in terms of bodily functions, organs and zones. (Tustin, 1972, p. 178) The indications and characteristi... ...ng autism, autistic children most of the time have himerosal, mercury and neuro-developmental disorders as well that can not be found in normal children at the same time. The small differences in mercury exposure and detoxification ability drive huge differences in the brain development of small autistic children as compared to normal children. Children less than 5 years old with autism might repeat actions over and over again, and they might have trouble if family routines change. But he normal children of the same age donââ¬â¢t have such problems. References Fisher, James T. "CHARLIE'S WORLD : A family battles autism." Commonweal 8 Sept. 2000: 13. Questia. 5 Sept. 2003 . Gke Task 2
Literature, Arts and the Humanities Romanticism and Realism 02-01-2010 Romanticism and Realism are two very different periods in literary and art history. Although both periods completely disagreed with each other they were a result of the social and economic revolt. Romanticism was an artistic, literary and social movement that originated in the second half of the eighteenth century in Western Europe. The French revolution laid the background for this era as people wanted to get an escape from the confines of daily life. This late era gained momentum in reaction to the Industrial Revolution. Many revolted against higher society and the political aspect of the time. The movement put a new outlook on difficult emotions such as fear and terror. Romanticism was known as a new revival of the medievalism as certain elements of the era are seen as a way to escape the new bustling world and ever populating cities in Europe. This era also attempted to embrace the exotic and the unfamiliar by using the imagination to escape. Although Romanticism began in Germany its effects were seen through the world. This influential era reached America in the early nineteenth century and was just as diverse as the movement that was quickly transitioning in the Western Europe. A modern characteristic of romanticism could be considered misunderstood and anything that may differentiate from the trends of life. Many scholars have different opinions on the characteristics of Romanticism as some believe it is a beginning of a tradition of resistance to the enlightenment and other believe it is a direct result of the French Revolution.Charles Baudelaire was quoted as characterizing romanticism as ââ¬Å"precisely situated neither in choice of subject nor exact truth but in the way of feelingâ⬠This era emphasized intuition and imagination that has led many to believe that romantic thinking is simply irrational and crosses the line of what is acceptable thinking in and of the world during this era. In art most found a recurring theme from criticism of the past. Often artist would use woman and children in their works to depict the new pure nature. A famous artist from the Romanticism period named Thomas Cole epicted a Manââ¬â¢s journey through life in his ââ¬Å"Voyage through Lifeâ⬠series. This exceptional expression of art shows a struggle of survival through an immense nature, from birth to death. The realism period made its mark in history from 1830 to 1870. Realismââ¬â¢s main principle was considered to be more of a way of thinking instead of a movement that involved a large culture. Realism went against everything Classicism and Romanticism had so strongly emphasized accusing the movement of being blind to the real world and not depicting the beauty in everyday life. This late 19th century movement took all of the elements that could falsify or bring a cloudy view to the true life hardships and successes out of art to show the beauty of real life Re alism came to France in the late 1840ââ¬â¢s with democracy in mind. The English focused realism on social liberation of the middle and lower class by taking a stand against materialistic views from the Royal Academy. Artist during the realism period focused on optic effects and lighting and how it affected everyday life. Artist believed that Science held the key to solving the problems that every day life brought fourth. As a result, a tendency flourished among realists to produce paintings that reflected the everyday mental experiences of contemporary life. This included abstract concepts such as cultures, problems and customs which tended to focus specifically on the immediate surrounds of the artist and thusly include objects and people traditionally not considered of any artistic merit. (ââ¬Å"A Short history,â⬠) Romanticism was the sugar coated escape for the reality occurring around people in the late 18th century however Realism went completely against what romanticis m held to be so important in its period. The Realism period provided a scientific answer for the imbalance in society caused but the Romantic views of people in the late 18th century. Realism showed how important it was to appreciate everyday life and the works that contributed to your society as Romanticism tended to rebel against all political and social influences of the time period. Realism waged a metaphorical battle against any art that depicted emotions or romanticism. Realism seemed to fade when the Impressionism period came to light. This period has some similarities to realism. The Impressionism period reflected a more extended version of realism. Impressionism was more scenic and landscape but still focused on using everyday life as the basis of the art. . Francisco Goyaââ¬â¢s performed etchings such as his work ââ¬Å"The Sleep of reasonâ⬠he believed art should reflect the way the world was without illusion. (ââ¬Å"Learn about realism,â⬠) These periods broug ht us great writers such as Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne and artist such as Eugene Delacroix that have greatly influenced the artist and writers of today.Although both periods completely disagreed with each other they were both a result of the social and economic situation that was in need of a solution. The Ethics of Sexual Orientation-Based Discrimination in...
Tangibly speaking, discrimination occurring on the basis of sexual orientation, while small in aggregate numbers, reaches the same rates as gendered discrimination against women in the workplace, when measured at a per capita rate, and creates a situation in which homosexual and transgendered individuals typically earn 10 or more percent less income than their heterosexual peers (Croteau, 1996). With this, sexual orientation-based discrimination is a significant problem in American society. In a broad sense, the pervasiveness of this discrimination is facilitated by the significant permeation of religious bias into Americas ostensibly secular democracy and civil society. Tangibly, large religious organizations such as the Catholic andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Furthermore, throughout the civil rights struggle that began in the mid 20th century, and which led to the drafting of significant anti-discrimination legislation in the United States, neither legislation or judicial preced ent has specifically designated the LGBT community as a protected class at the federal level, in contrast to the protections of this type provided to ethnic and racial minorities as well as the disabled, amongst other minorities (Wintermute, 2002, 38-39). With this, there is no overarching federal protection for LGBT individuals suffering from discrimination in either the public sphere or the workplace. While some states, notably California, New York, Vermont, and a few others have adopted legislation protecting LGBT individuals from discrimination in the workplace, all of this legislation suffers from inconsistent enforcement (Cavico et al., 2012, 3). With this, it is apparent that the anti-LGBT sentiment that permeates the American public sphere, buttressed by the countrys intense political polarization on socio-religious issues, has led to an inadequate protection of the LGBT minority from discrimination in the workplace.
